Cheltenham Junior Grand Prix
Richard Marshall produced a brilliant performance to take the Cheltenham Junior Grand Prix title, defeating number one-seed Chris Doran's conqueror Kim Daybell, and the dangerous Alim Hirji on the way to the final. There he met Welsh star Patrick Thomas who himself had performed superbly to defeat number two seed Darren Reed from Redruth in the semis. One of Richard's most outstanding tactical performances saw himj take the final
relatively comfortably three games to one. County number two Chris Smith also performed well to convincingly defeat eighth seed Billy Deville, before bowing out to Reed in the quarter-finals.
Two weeks later Richard completed the triple crown at the Devon Junior Championships winning Boys Singles & Doubles (with singles final victim Smith) & the mixed doubles with Laura McLeod.
Vicky Smith took two titles on the first day at Cheltenham, the under-13's without losing a game, including an 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 final victory over Charleigh Kirby, and dropping only one game in the banded cadet event, in the final against top seed Abbie Milwain. She played even better in the junior events on Sunday, defeating Milwain again, young Welsh star Chloe Thomas in straight games & battling through two titanic battles against the long pimples of eventual junior runner-up, Megan Phillips. Both were narrowly lost in the fifth game!
