Devon County Championships 07/08
Chris Smith took the scalp of number one seed Chris Brown on his way to an all-Plymouth final in the Devon Senior Championships at Okehampton.
Smith, competing in the singles, also defeated Jon May on his way to a showdown with fellow Plymothian Paul Whiting. Smith found Whiting, the number two seed, too much to handle in the final.
Whiting had reached the match via wins over Kevin Buddell and Mike Short and defeated his city compatriot 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4 to become champion.
Whiting netted his second title of the championships when he beat Short in the veterans' singles final.
Meanwhile, the ladies' singles were won by Sally Smith in another all-Plymouth final.
Smith defeated Liz May 11-9-11-6, 11-9.
The men's doubles, which saw 28 players involved, resulted in a win for Brown and Buddell, who defeated Mike Short and Jon May 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-2.
Smith won another piece of silverware for her trophy cabinet when, with Elaine Short, she saw off May for a second time during the championships.
May, who was partnered by Zuza Zimny, was defeated 11-9, 10-12, 11-7, 11-6.
The popular mixed doubles, with 20 entrants, was no more lucky for May.
With Jon May, she was beaten by her nemesis Sally Smith, who was partnered by Harry Cutler, in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Chris Brown and 12-year-old Vicky Smith beat the experienced Kevin Buddell and Elaine Short in a five setter.
Sally Smith and her partner, however, lost to Brown and Smith younger in a three sets to one defeat in the final.
In the plate event, Stuart Hare was the winner, with John Shearman runner-up.
